Stanley Elementary School has two buddy benches (one on each playground). The purpose of the buddy bench is to foster friendships and inclusive behaviors. If a student doesn't have someone to play with at recess, they can sit on the buddy bench. This is a signal for other students to include that student in their games. It is a great opportunity to meet new friends and include other students in recess activities. Great job, Stanley Elementary.

Blue Jay Families, A recent topic trending among children/teens on TikTok is called "Devious Licks" where students steal objects and show off what they have taken on their social media posts. Unfortunately, this trend has made it into our school. We experienced incidents of stolen items and vandalism that mimics the popular TikTok trend. The identified trend for October through the TikTok platform is "Smack a staff member on the backside". The act of physically striking a staff member with hands or any object will not be tolerated and will be dealt with severely. In addition to any school consequences, law enforcement will also be called. We ask that our families speak to their children about social media, current trends taking place, and how these trends could impact their future. We want nothing more than our students and staff to take pride in our school and respect all members. Please know that any actions against any member of our school will lead to consequences. Thank you for your support in helping us teach our children the importance of doing what is right and not falling into irresponsible actions that can lead to harm.

We are currently finalizing class lists and making a few updates to supply lists, so pay attention to our school website for posts for the upcoming school year and make sure to check the mail for your 2021-2022 school year informational packets. Enjoy the remainder of your summer and I look forward to seeing full hallways and classrooms again this fall.

Please click the following link to sign up for a time for you and your child to attend our K Days on either Aug 3 or 4th. https://doodle.com/poll/8uux33xw6hdya87f?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link There are two sessions to choose from 9-11:00 am or 12-2:00 pm. Essler's 7th grade Life Science has been learning about the flow of energy in a system. We've explored the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration, specifically. This week your scientists investigated how glucose affects the rate of cellular respiration. On Wednesday they made yeast beads, it was a pretty cool process! Then today we used the beads to put in respirometers that they assembled to measure the amount of CO2 (carbon dioxide) produced in our Control (just water + yeast beads) versus our Experiment (glucose + yeast beads). #esslerscience

The school board had a special meeting on January 14 to discuss the continuation of wearing masks in our school district. At this time the board decided to continue to require masks in the school buildings even if the state mandate is lifted at some point. The board’s main goal is to keep students in the building learning face-to-face as much as possible and they felt that the masks help that goal since an individual does not have to quarantine if both they and the person who has tested positive are wearing masks. The board will review the requirement to wear masks at least monthly to determine whether they will continue with the requirement.

Last night the governor announced that his executive order that placed restrictions on athletic contests is set to expire on Monday. This announcement was in addition to NDHSAA passing new guidelines on attendance. Stanley will now allow 300 fans at our games based off of the graduated guidance (see image). For the Lions Tournament starting on Monday, each school will be given 150 tickets per game in Stanley and Ray but 125 tickets per team at Berthold. During the regular season, District 16 voted to distribute up to 75% of the allowable tickets to the home school and up to 25% of the tickets for away schools. For Stanley that would be 225 home tickets and 75 away. Since not all gym sizes are the same, ticket numbers will change based on the host sites gym capacity, but the percentages of distribution will remain the same. Masks are required for all of those in attendance and concessions will remain closed until further notice.

For the second semester (January 4 – May 21) our full-time online option will look different than the first semester. For the second semester, our students who opt to learn full-time online will be utilizing an online learning platform called Edgenuity. The students will be learning from this platform and will not be learning directly from the teachers in our buildings. Everyone should realize that this is a rigorous program that will not be an easier option to in person learning. Parents/guardians will need to assist students in grades K-6 with coursework as they will not be working directly with a teacher. Older students (7-12) will have to watch their pacing and make sure they are getting their work done so they can complete their classes prior to the end of the school year, this will require parents to help monitor their student’s progress and students to be self-motivated and organized. Again, all online learners should expect that the online courses will be quite rigorous. Students who choose the online option will not be learning at the same time as the learners in our buildings, rather they will be learning asynchronously through this new platform. Students will be able to work on their classes at their own times. We will have a staff person who is monitoring student progress and helping to keep students on track to complete their courses by the end of the semester. This staff person will be the point of contact for all online learners. Any questions on the new online learning option should be directed to the building principals – Mrs. Klabunde at the elementary school (701-628-2422) and Mrs. Pulver at the high school (701-628-2342). Please complete the survey at the link below by Monday, November 16. https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=Kni_2_HO8UqGyB-SAQYdtluIF0g7CthOsy3ZDOrrYz9UNFROSUw0ODhOVUpEQTJNWllWQlJTVlo1RC4u

For the last week Mr. Hellman’s social studies class has been learning about the 2020 election. They have looked at who the candidates are running for office in North Dakota as well as the ballot measures and even learned what the electoral college is. Today everything came to a close as the students were allowed to vote in their own classroom election. Students were given a sample ballot yesterday to take home and discuss with parents. After deciding who they wanted to vote for they cast their ballot during the election in fourth grade social studies class. The results of the election were: President: Jorgenson - 1 Biden - 2 Trump - 38 Congress: Peterson - 3 Armstrong - 33 Raknerud - 3 State Senate: Rust - 37 State House: Anderson - 30 Longmuir - 38 Governor: Lenz - 2 Burgum - 35 Hendrickson - 1 Coachman (write in) - 2 Superintendent of Public Instruction: Dick - 24 Baesler - 20 County Commissioner: Houge - 13 Olson - 27 Rice - 14 Heinle - 25 Ballot Measure #1 Yes - 12 No - 27 Ballot Measure #2 Yes - 21 No - 18

As you have probably heard, Governor Burgum has downgraded the designation of Mountrail County from yellow to orange. The Governor and the ND Healthy Return to Learning Committee made clear that the county colors are specific to large gatherings and businesses and not meant for schools to alter the instructional model they are using. We are required to report each individual associated with the school (student and/or staff member) who tests positive for COVID-19. So far, since we have had to start reporting information to the state (which was in early August before school started), we have had to report 14 positive cases associated with the school. Of those 14 cases, 7 were not in the school during their infectious period either because it was prior to us being in school or because they were out of the school for other reasons. Of the 7 cases that were in our buildings during their infectious period, six (6) were deemed to have close contacts and one had no close contacts. From these cases we had a total of 101 student close contacts identified and 9 staff close contacts. All close contacts were quarantined for 14 days from their last exposure to the positive case. Of our 110 total close contacts, 1 has ended up testing positive. So, only 0.9% of close contacts in our school have tested positive. From the data tracked in North Dakota it has been found that about 1% of close contacts in schools have tested positive and, as you can see, we are experiencing about the same in our school. So, though the county level designation has changed, at this time we aren't making a change to our instructional model. However, there may be some changes to the number of people allowed at school events (sports and other activities) and more limitations placed on visitors in the buildings and use of the building by outside groups. Last, but not least, it is strongly recommended that everyone in the school wear a mask. Wearing a mask will help cut down on the number of people required to be sent home as close contacts. As you have probably heard, if both the positive individual and anyone who would normally be considered a close contact are wearing masks, only the positive individual will have to isolate. Those who would be otherwise be considered close contacts would not have to quarantine, they would just have to continue to wear a mask and self-monitor for symptoms. So, please do consider wearing a mask when social distancing is not possible.

Please remember that our distance learning option is for students who need to be home for an extended period of time due to quarantining or isolating. This is not for students to come and go at will. When your elementary aged child needs to distance learn, please let the classroom teacher know a day ahead of time. This gives the teachers time to get materials together and time for you to pick up materials for the students. When your junior high/high school aged child needs to learn from home, please call the office so we can alert the teachers for attendance taking purposes. Thank you.

Daily Day-maker Movement Week One: #madeyousmile Don’t get so absorbed with your own life that you fail to look up. When we intentionally look up - notice - act, we are given the opportunity to be necessary to someone - to be their blessing, to be there day-maker. When we choose to live our lives from that lens, we become bigger on the inside, which makes us better on the outside. Let’s intentionally create a ripple effect that lifts hearts. Scattered all over Stanley this week will be “made you smile” gifts for the person finding it and for that person to share. The Stanley Rec and the Mountrail Country Health Foundation will kick off the week. Each class in the elementary and high school will be working together to scatter the smiles as the week progresses. Nobody will really remember anything about you except the imprint you choose to make on them. Intentionally Look Up...Notice....Act. One simple act can change the tone of someone’s day, or even life.

A message from the Music Department: Unfortunately, due to covid-19 and the aerosol studies that were put out by the University of Colorado Boulder, the Music Department and Administration for Stanley Public Schools have sadly decided to postpone the planning of Fall/Winter concerts until Spring Semester. We've exhausted all possibilities for alternatives, and this is the conclusion we've come to. We will be posting a Music Department video later this semester to show the community all that we are currently working on in the classroom in the place of regular concert music. We are so happy that we are a part of such a supportive, patient, positive, and kind community - we excitedly await the day that we can get back to normal music activities. If you'd like to read more about the aerosol study, here is a link: https://www.nfhs.org/media/4119369/aerosol-study-prelim-results-round-2-final-updated.pdf.

With the large number of absences of staff due to illness and quarantining for close contacts, we are in desperate need of subs in pretty much all areas of the school – we need substitute teachers, substitute paras, substitute cooks, substitute janitors, and substitute secretaries. If we are not able to find enough subs it becomes increasingly likely that we may have to move to an online format for school for at least some of our students. If you are willing to be considered for a sub position in any of these areas please contact Mrs. Pulver or Mr. Stafslien at the high school (701-628-2342) or Mrs. Klabunde at the elementary school (701-628-2422).

This week is National Arts in Education week in North Dakota! https://mailchi.mp/e4a18fdd3727/governor-burgum-proclaims-arts-in-education-week "This came by way of an official proclamation from [Governor Burgum's] office, which recognized the “arts as an integral part of life in North Dakota and an integral part of a complete education that contributes to the vibrancy and vitality of communities and the nation.” Please reach out and let Governor Burgum know you appreciate his support of arts in education via Facebook, Twitter, or Email." From Ms. Olson: Arts education has been a large part of my life since I was a little girl. From the time I was able to pick up a crayon, I've been drawing, coloring, painting, and taking pictures. As I got older I discovered how much I love music and singing and how free and beautiful it makes me feel when I listen to and participate in choir and instrumental groups. In junior high school, I learned to play the guitar and, was active in high school talent shows, and LOVED to write my own lyrics. When I was in college, I discovered programs called "Finale" and "Noteflight." Those programs gave me new ways to put my emotions and feelings onto a page and be even more creative with how I write music. It's so important to have some kind of creative outlet especially for young kids - it was life changing for me to be able to have music and the visual arts as a safe place to go to and be myself. Those who know me best know that music was, and is, the one thing that can get me out of a bad mood, help lift my spirits, and keep me going even when I am having a hard time. #BecauseOfArtsEd How have the arts affected you and your life? Share a story with us!

Parents, please alert us if your child is home ill and will be learning from home. We need to have record of this. If you have not previously selected distance learning as an option, your child should be physically present in school unless they are showing symptoms. Your child cannot move back and forth at will. Stanley Public School is pleased to announce that all students are eligible to receive FREE breakfast and lunch until further notice. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on Monday that it would allow schools to serve free meals to kids until December 31, 2020 or until federal funding runs out. Effective immediately, all Stanley students will receive a free breakfast and lunch. Stanley Schools will continue to track when students eat breakfast or lunch via their lunch accounts. Although students will not be charged, current funds in a student’s account can be held until USDA funding is exhausted. Are students who are distance learning eligible for free meals? Yes. However, you must call the appropriate school (high school or elementary school) to let them know you want a meal and to find out what time you can pick up your meal. Should our family still apply for free or reduced meals? YES, families still must submit applications for free and reduced meals as the USDA funding could run out prior to December 31. If no approved application is on file, families will automatically become full pay once federal funding runs out. So, please continue to submit free and reduced price meals applications.

Someone with COVID-19 has been reported at Stanley Junior/Senior High School. No students were identified as a close contact (within six feet for a total of 15 minutes or more) to the individual with COVID-19. This means all students are at lower risk for COVID-19 infection, but parents should still be aware of the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 infection and what to do if your child gets sick. Common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever and cough. Some individuals may also experience shortness of breath, runny nose, fatigue, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, loss of taste/smell, or gastrointestinal symptoms. Symptoms can vary by person and range from very mild symptoms to severe illness. The disease is most severe in elderly and individuals with serious chronic medical conditions. The infected person is following North Dakota Department of Health guidelines concerning isolation and is not in the school now. Also, all individuals identified as close contacts to the individual with COVID-19 have been advised to stay home from school for the next two weeks and quarantine. Elementary parents and guardians, we’re looking forward to seeing the students on Wednesday! Since we’re trying to limit the number of students at recess in the morning, please make every effort to arrive after 8:20, if possible. Do not bring students before 8:00, please. We’ll allow one parent to accompany their kindergartener to class on the first day only. There will be no other parents in the building. Thank you for understanding. We will have staff on hand to help students find their classrooms and get their supplies to class, as needed. Students can go right to class to drop off supplies before going out to recess. Consider sending a water bottle, since our water fountains have been turned off. Water bottle filling stations will stay in use. We look forward to working together to make this a successful year!

Hi Stanley Parents, With school just around the corner, the math department would like to talk about calculators. Each math teacher has a shared classroom set, and we do have a plan to disinfect these between each class. If we digress in our Covid safety level, we may lose the sharing opportunity. If you would like to provide your child with a personal calculator, you may do so. IT IS NOT REQUIRED, but could be recommended. These are the calculators that we are using: Jr. High, PreAlgebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Applied Math: ~~ TI-30xIIs - Scientific Calculator https://www.amazon.com/TI-30XIIS-Texas-Instruments-Scientific-Calculator/dp/B015G8NZKW/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=ti-30xiis&qid=1596663863&sr=8-3 Algebra 2, PreCalc, Calc: ~~TI-84 Plus - Graphing Calculator. **this is a fairly expensive calculator (around $120), but it will be required in college math, so it could be considered an investment. https://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-TI-84-Graphing-Calculator/dp/B00TFYYWQA/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=ti-84&qid=1596663910&sr=8-2 Please reach out to me if you have any questions.

We want to thank all of our students, staff, and families for their patience as we plan to resume school this fall. As you all probably know, Governor Burgum released the ND Smart Restart Guidance for schools yesterday. The guidelines from the state provided for local control and decision making by school boards and administrators in consultation with educators, staff, local public health officials, and families. The decisions on how to open school safely will be based on guidance from the North Dakota Department of Health, US Centers for Disease Control, and other sources. The guidelines require districts to present two plans to the school board for approval before any student services can be conducted this fall. Both plans will be published on the district’s web site. School administrators will now begin the process of planning for returning to school this fall. As mentioned previously, we will be seeking input from families. In the coming days we will be sending out a link to a survey for families to share their thoughts and input on several key points. We will post the link to the survey on our web site, on the school’s Facebook page, and a link will be sent by text message via our alert system. Again, thank you for your patience as we work out plans to resume school this fall.

It's our last week of the "Live Your Best Life" Challenge! All names will be put into a drawing for a grand prize! Did you know that spending time with family builds confidence for all of its members. Parents can teach children to build self-esteem through specific skills such as problem solving and communication. They can also model the ability to love oneself without degrading others. For parents and children, confidence grows simply with the knowledge that they are valued and appreciated by their loved ones. For more information on the benefits you gain by spending time as a family go to: https://highlandspringsclinic.org/blog/the-top-ten-benefits-of-spending-time-with-family/

Live Your Best Life Challenge - Week 3! According to Highland Springs Specialty Clinic, children who spend more time with their families have shown less risk of behavioral issues, such as violence and substance abuse. When they receive positive attention for positive behaviors, it increases their desire to continue those healthy patterns. Doing activities together also provides an outlet for pent-up emotions that could otherwise lead to unhealthy decisions. If a child or teenager feels comfortable bringing problems to you for a listening ear and advice, they will be better equipped to cope with problems and make positive choices.

Blue Jay students: Happy last day of school! I’m so proud of all of you for your hard work this entire year. You’ve done your best on your schoolwork and have shown great character in how you choose to treat others. You’ve been missed for the past couple months, and we all can’t wait to see you again! Sixth graders: Congratulations on graduating strong. I know you’ll take your empathy, leadership skills, and strong work ethic with you to seventh grade. Parents: You did it!!! Your dedication to your children’s education didn’t go unnoticed. Thank you for your hard work in helping our students navigate their new way of learning. We know it was challenging and appreciate your help. Sending you all virtual high fives and pats on the back. Teachers: There needs to be new words invented for the respect you all deserve. The dedication you’ve shown during our distance learning experience is admirable. You changed the face of public education overnight while homeschooling your own children and taking care of your families with grace. It’s been awesome to witness such incredible work ethic. Your students and parents are blessed to have teachers who care so much about each and every student. Support staff: You’ve been the silent rock stars of Operation Distance Learning! You’ve come in to work even in the midst of virus uncertainty, all for the sake of helping your district. I have so much admiration and appreciation for your willingness to do whatever it takes, whenever is needed. You’re incredible role models to the students and community. On Friday, May 15, the senior class will be using the west parking lot at the high school for their class picture from 9:50 - 10:30. For anyone who needs to pick up locker items during that time, we ask that you park on the street to the north of the school and walk to the front door where we will meet you and get your items. Pick up will return to normal once the seniors vacate the parking lot. Seniors, please park on the street when you arrive so we can get set up in the parking lot. Remember to stay 6 ft apart from your classmates.

On Friday, May 8, Gov. Burgum lifted the 14 day quarantine if you are traveling to ND from a different state. The quarantine is still in effect for those from an international destination. This may affect those immediate family members who are planning on attending our gradation ceremony. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, we are not able to open our graduation ceremony beyond immediate family members or grandparents. If we need to hold the ceremony in our gym vs. our football field, only parents, their spouses, and immediate family living inside the home will be able to attend. Please see the attached information for our graduation plans. We will have a meeting for senior class parents on Wednesday, May 13 at noon and at 7pm. You only need to attend one meeting. Link will be sent out Wednesday morning. Here is our 2020 Graduation Plan: https://5il.co/g1hl

Families of seniors, we are planning an outdoor graduation ceremony at this time. The outdoor ceremony is our preference, with an indoor ceremony planned as backup in case of inclement weather. If we must have the indoor ceremony, any family members attending who live outside the state of ND must be inside the state and quarantined for 14 days before they can attend. This follows the orders set forth by the ND Deportment of Health at this time. This may change in the future, but is the order we must operate under now. We are still finalizing all of our plans and will share them with you as soon as possible.

Dear Senior Parents, Thank you all for your patience as we waited for direction from the state as far as how your child’s Graduation will look. This is already an emotional time for you as parents and to add uncertainty to it is difficult. Know that Administration and I are working hard to pull everything together while following the guidelines issued by the CDC and the state. The following dates and times have been confirmed. Links to the virtual events will be shared in digitally in numerous ways as soon as they are ready. Here is a list of the dates and times of senior events: · Senior Parent Meeting: TBA – Mrs. Pulver and Mr. Holte are working on this right now. · Senior Virtual Class Night – May 19 at 7:00 PM will be held virtually. Scheduled links will be shared as soon as scholarship selection has been completed. Those links will turn on at 7:00 PM that evening. · Senior Community Parade – May 22nd at 7:00. More information will be given as this event is still in the planning stages. · Graduation Ceremony – Will be held at Stanley High School Gymnasium at 2:00 PM. A link for the live stream of the ceremony will be sent out closer to Graduation Day. Thank you again for your patience during this time! It is certainly a time of uncharted waters for us all. We will keep you updated through this planning. We are communicating with your senior most days through Microsoft Teams and Remind. Thank you! Sincerely, Mrs. Sorenson

We’ll be having drop-off and pick-up days on the weekdays beginning May 14th through May 21st. During this time, you’ll be able to drop off any library books, textbooks, and devices (with cords) you may have. You’ll also be able to pick up your child’s personal belongings. We’ll have people available between 8:00 am through 6:00 pm on the days listed above. High school families will drive up to the front door of the high school and someone will bring your items out to you. Elementary families, if the weather is nice on the 14th and 15th, we’ll have outside stations set up according to grade level on the south side of the elementary school. You’ll be able to drive up to the grade level you need for easy pick up of your child’s belongings. There will be someone to help at each grade level. That is where you’ll drop off your books and/or technology devices as well. When dropping of a device, the cord must be with it, and there will be a sheet for you to sign stating you’ve dropped it off. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll have items inside and will bring them out to you at the front door. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your cooperation and support during our distance learning experience. You’ve done an incredible job with all that has been expected of you, and we all appreciate your dedication to your children’s learning.

SOAR Video and Homework....Dare to Define Yourself through growth: 1 - Check-in with yourself...How are you feeling right now? Name those feelings, acknowledge those feelings. Then text, call, snap, OR message a family member or a friend and ask them how they are feeling...Do not accept "good" or "okay" as an answer. Say, "I really want to know, how ARE you?" Then listen with the passion that you want someone to listen to you. 2 - Write down on a piece of paper or in your notes on your phone or list in your head the disappointments you are facing on this day. Name them. Acknowledge them. Sit in the disappointment for a moment. 3 - Name at least ONE thing you are thankful for right now. 4 - Decide how and what you are going to do to have a positive effect on those around you each day. I am certain that there are still many questions in our community about the status of school activities. I can provide the information we have at this time, but there is still much uncertainty. We miss having the students in the building and are looking forward to when we can have them back in the school again. Below is an update on a few items that I am sure many in our community are wondering about: When Will Classes Resume? The short answer is we do not know when, or if, classes will resume this spring. We definitely miss having the students in the buildings and we are hopeful that we can have the students back in the building prior to the end of the school year. However, Governor Burgum has ordered all schools to be closed until further notice. We are expecting an update at the end of April or beginning of May. If things change and the Governor allows us to resume providing an education in our building we all need to be prepared for it to look different than what we have been used to. We would potentially have to look at implementing recommendations on how to follow social distancing guidelines in our buildings. We may not be able to have all grades/classes in the building at the same time, we may have to have smaller groups of students in the building for shorter periods of time, etc. We just don’t know what it might look like to bring students back into our buildings. So, even if it is announced that schools may resume please be prepared for it to look different than what we have been used to. Extracurricular Activities The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) has postponed all high school extracurricular activities until at least May 1. Therefore, at this time our extracurricular activities are postponed until at least May 1. We will await further guidance from NDHSAA regarding our spring sports and activities. Prom Prom was supposed to be held on Saturday, April 18. We had announced earlier that we were postponing prom. We know this is an important event for our students and we are hoping that it can take place at a later date. We are looking at some dates in July that we may be able to hold prom. We are also exploring the option of having the annual Junior-Senior Banquet on the same evening as prom. We are working on surveying students to find out what dates might work best for them. More information will be provided as soon as it is available. Class Night Typically the school hands out scholarships and other awards at Class Night the week of graduation. Class Night will still take place this year, but how it will look has not been determined yet. Scholarships will still be awarded and students will be recognized though it will likely not be in the same format as previous years. It should be expected that the number of participants may be limited. More information will be provided as soon as it is available. Graduation We will plan to honor our seniors on their regularly scheduled graduation day at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 24, 2020. We don’t know what that will look like yet, but will be keeping parents and the community informed as we get closer to that date.
