Mrs. Verano’s 8th graders had the exciting opportunity to meet Mrs. Erin Essler, the high school Biology teacher. She shared her expertise and introduced the class to Evolution and Natural Selection, providing evidence to support scientific theories. To make learning even more engaging, she used gummy bears to demonstrate natural selection in action. The students had fun observing how some gummy bears were ‘eaten’ while a few remained, helping them understand survival and adaptation in a hands-on way.

Today, Mrs. Verano’s 7th-grade class explored ecological niches and how abiotic and biotic factors contribute to an organism’s survival in an ecosystem. As part of the lesson, students created dioramas of specific ecosystems using homemade playdough to craft 3D models of organisms and environmental factors. Through this activity, they were able to identify adaptations and understand the roles organisms play in their environments.
