Mr. Hellman’s 4th graders have been busy showing their kindness this month. They started the month by collecting pop tops to help Mrs. Sem and family with an upcoming trip to the Ronald McDonald House. Even the class was surprised with how many pop tops were collected! They had so much fun that they’ve decide to continue collecting pop tops all year so they can continue to donate! They then moved on to help Prairie Ford with their canned food drive collecting 144 food items!

And the jury says...case closed for the 2025 mock trials.

On November 14th, seniors in forensic science arrived at the Mountrail County Courthouse after two months of diligent preparation and rehearsal. Attorneys delivered passionate opening and closing arguments, witnesses provided expert testimony, and the courtroom buzzed with objections and critical thinking. The class was split into four teams working two cases.

In the case of U.S. vs. Andie Martin, students tackled a late-night bar-fight scenario involving conflicting witness stories, questionable motives, and a defendant who claimed self-defense. For the state, attorneys Erika Littlefield and Valentina Anthony examined their witnesses played by Carly Rismon, CeeJay Bohmbach, and Makayla Johnson. For the defense, attorneys Elizabeth Nelson and Joaquin Loera examined their witnesses and client played by Cody Anderson, Aldo Vasquez, and Laney Jackson. The jury rendered not guilty verdicts for Class A Murder and Class B Manslaughter.

During U.S. vs. Peyton Reed, the case examined whether Peyton Reed knowingly brought brownies containing an unauthorized substance to a party at an abandoned mansion. The trial focused on how the brownies were prepared, who had access to them, and whether Peyton was aware of their contents before distributing them. For the state, attorneys Italia Rodriguez and Alexis Laparra examined their witnesses played by Katherine Gonzalez Villamil and Joseph Wolter. For the defense, attorneys Ashley Ellis and Tylie Johson examined their witnesses and client played by Nevaeh Charnetski, Aiden Fairchild-Brown, and Joey Cotton. The jury rendered not guilty verdicts for criminal trespass and possession of fentanyl while voting guilty for possession of marijuana and distribution of illegal drugs .

Recognition to the jury for weighing the evidence and having thoughtful deliberations. Jury members were Dale Kilen, Max Jackson, Dakota Moody, Amanda Dick, Kaylee Cotton, Kylee Collins, Breanna Istilart, Brooklynn Upchurch, and Anna Ross. Court Bailiff was played by Jevon Johnson.

A special shoutout to the Mountrail County Courthouse for helping to make mock trials an opportunity. Clerk of Courts ensured trials ran smoothly from start to finish. A thank-you to our two judges, Mr. Enget and Mrs. Fiesel, who generously volunteered their time to preside over the trials and share real-world insight into the criminal justice system. Their guidance elevated the experience. Court is adjourned.

Last week, our students took time to reflect on what they are thankful for. Children wrote their gratitude on a paper leaf and added it to our Thankful Tree—a beautiful reminder of the kindness, love, and unity that fill our halls every day. ❤️🌳

We are also deeply moved to share that, together as a school and community, we have raised over $5,000 for Bentley!! Your generosity has brought comfort to a grieving family and shown what it truly means to lift one another up.

Thank you to every student, staff member, family, and community member who contributed, prayed, shared, or supported in any way. In moments of sadness, you created a living example of hope and compassion.

💜 We are proud of our students.
💜 We are grateful for our families.
💜 We are thankful for our community.

Mrs. Verano’s class has been exploring the circulatory and respiratory systems, and today was truly special! The students had the chance to meet Ms. Carly Mudderman, a registered nurse from Mountrail County Medical Center, along with Mr. Jarrod Mudderman, an EMT from the same hospital. They gave an incredible hands-on demonstration of how CPR and AEDs work, and also taught the students what to do if someone is choking — including infants. Their presentation was highly informative and highlighted just how important it is to learn these life-saving skills. My students were fully engaged and excited to practice the demonstrations themselves. What an inspiring and unforgettable day in science!
