Mr. Hellman's Social Studies classes have been learning about the early settlement of North Dakota. We have learned about Bonanza farms, the impact of the railroad on early settlement, how ND helped Teddy Roosevelt become president and even how the territorial capital was moved (its a VERY interesting story). The state put out online books that the class is using to learn about our history. Check out the book we are currently using here: https://www.ndstudies.gov/gr4/early-settlement-north-dakota (the capital story is in section 4 a secret trick)

On Tuesday, December 6th, students in grades 1-3 had the opportunity to listen to North Dakota author and musician Jessie Veeder. Her presentation was sponsored by grants from the Minot Area Council of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Jessie read her book “Prairie Princess” and talked about the benefits of growing up in rural North Dakota. Then she led the students in singing “You are My Sunshine.” Finally, she treated the students to a rendition of her original song “Happy”. To learn more about Jessie Veeder and purchase her book or music, please checkout her website https://jessieveedermusic.com/.

Mrs. Stafslien’s third graders have become penpals with the residents of the Assisted Living Rosen Place this year. Today, the class went to meet them in person and gave them a gift for Christmas! Students made the residents a sock snowman and handed them their penpal letters! They also got to play Bingo together! What a fun day and experience for both groups! They can’t wait to go back! 💌💌💌

Ms. Verano's 7th graders learned about vertebrates and wrapped up learning with a hands on experience of dissecting a frog. Students had to identify the parts of a frog and were surprised to learn that a frog's tongue flips forward to catch their prey.

Congrats to our very own Ms. Hawbaker for being recognized at the National Association of Agriculture Educators Convention in Las Vegas as a Teacher Turn the Key recipient. At the convention, Ms. Hawbaker was able to attend sessions on teacher retention, work/life balance, and how to better educate the future of agriculture. We are very proud of Ms. Hawbaker and her wonderful accomplishments in the field of agriculture education!

This morning, Ava delivered a package of hand-tied fleece blankets to the nursing home. Ava is a member of the Stanley Chapter of the ND Association of Honor Society, which tasks her to complete a community service project during her senior year. She said she chose this project because "these blankets will bring happiness and help keep the residents cozy and comfortable". Way to go Ava! Special thanks to bravera for sponsoring her project, and to Hadley for lending a helping hand.

On December 9th, Stanley students in grades 7-12 will participate in a health and wellness fair called Skittles Skool. This event is joint project between Stanley High School, The Mountrail County Health Foundation and The Stanley Park Board. Our effort is to provide students with information and guidance on difficult topics they face in their everyday lives. Students rotate through each speaker in 20 minute intervals. This event has proven to be a worthwhile day for our students. The list of speakers and topics is included in this post. Should you have any questions, please reach out to our high school principal at 701.628.2342 or alecia.pulver@k12.nd.us. If you would like to exempt your child from Skittles Skool, please return the opt out slip that was sent home on December 1st. A permission slip not returned will be considered permission to attend the Skittles Skool event.

Kudo's to our 4th Grade students and teachers for representing Stanley Community Schools so well. I just received a phone call from the ND Heritage Center in Bismarck, and they expressed how exceptionally well behaved they were on their field trip last week. Several staff/volunteers took notice and conveyed the need to recognize their outstanding behavior. Way to go Blue Jays.
