Mrs. Verano’s science class has been learning about evolution and the types of fossils that provide evidence for it. To deepen their understanding, students created mold and cast fossils using homemade playdough, as well as amber fossils using epoxy resin and dried bees / insects. Fossils are crucial in helping us understand who we were and what life was like in the past. To explore this concept further, we decided to conduct a lab on the different types of fossils.

Mrs. Verano’s science class is learning about nutrient cycling, the process by which nutrients are continuously transferred through ecosystems. One of the cycles they studied is the carbon cycle, which illustrates how carbon dioxide moves through the environment. Today, the students conducted a lab activity demonstrating cellular respiration, a key part of the carbon cycle. They mixed sugar, yeast, and water in a container, then placed a balloon over the opening to capture the carbon dioxide produced. Through this experiment, the students observed how living organisms release carbon dioxide, which is then used in photosynthesis allowing the cycle to continue.

Stanley Elementary School has several contagious sicknesses affecting both students and staff.  Confirmed cases of Covid 19, Influenza, Fifth's Disease (also known as slapped cheek disease).  Slapped cheek symptoms start off as low fever, headache, runny nose, sore throat, itching, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.  A rash often appear as bright red cheeks, on a childs arms, legs, or trunk.  Once the sickness develops a rash, that is actually when it is no longer contagious.  If your child is complaining of symptoms consistent with any of these sicknesses, please keep them home at lease 24 hours beyond the last recorded feverous temp, bout of diarrhea or vomiting, and overall symptoms have approved without symptom reducing medications.
