This week 5th graders experimented and found out that vinegar and salt can turn a dull penny shiny and new again! We spent this week investigating the "why" and "how" behind our experiment. This picture is from the very second these scientists took their penny out of the vinegar and salt solution to find that it worked!

STEM students have been on a mission to design a delayed-release pill! First, learning about the problem that certain medications need their active ingredient released at a controlled time...how do we do this?! Your engineers first went about testing the various plastic materials (polymers) that were given. Choosing what they thought was best, based on solubility tests, they began designing their prototype! I loved watching them work, fail, and keep trying to make their pill better! 💊 They had criteria: 3 colors all released at different times. Yellow at 30s, Red at 90s, and Blue at 240s. All color tablets in the same "pill package", and pill totally dissolved in less than 5 minutes. We held a competition between the groups on Thursday! STEM is all about the Engineering Design Process and your Blue Jays did awesome!

Today Mr. Hellman’s Social Studies class started learning about energy. We learned that there are two types: potential and kinetic. We used the example of a defensive football player (Mr. H) and a quarterback (student). Before the ball is hiked they are both at rest but ready to go or use energy (potential). Once the ball is hiked both players are moving and expending energy (kinetic). Mr. H finished with a game winning tackle!

The 5th graders had their first STEM challenge in science today! Using spaghetti noodles, string, tape, and a marshmallow, they worked in teams to build the tallest structure. The only twist: the marshmallow had to be on top! It was awesome to see their creative designs and hear them collaborating with other students.
