Miss Zahn’s language arts classes were ‘Barbecuing Up a Good Time with Idioms’ this week! The students worked in groups to match idioms to their meanings. We are having a blast with our Figurative Language Unit! 🤓 Did you know that “chew the fat” means to gossip? Apparently nowadays that’s called, “spilling the tea” according to some pretty hip fifth grade students. 😎

When you hear the word Garfield what do you think of? Mr. Hellman’s social studies classes were surprised to learn it was the name of a former president and not a big orange cat! Over the next week they are working on a research project where they are assigned a lesser known president and learn facts about their life and presidency. They are learning lots!

Mr. Hellman’s class played games today. They each had one minute to try dialing a rotary phone, then had to find a name in the phone book. With no Siri to help, it proved a challenge!

Mrs. Stafslien’s students created their own postcards that they were to send back “home” while traveling to Ellis Island/ NYC! They freehanded their front pictures and wrote letters on the back to family left behind. They did such a great job! 🗽

Today the North and South took a bit of a break from marching and drilling in the Civil War game. The class looked at what soldiers at that time did to pass the time when they were not marching, drilling, or fighting. One of the big activities of the time was to design a regimental flag. Groups began working on a flag of their own that could be carried into battle. General Hellman assures the troops that they will soon be “going to see the elephant” (fighting in their first battle).

Today was a big day in Mr. Hellman’s Civil War game. Students began marching towards a battlefield where they were told they would be engaging the enemy. As they approached a turn in the road they heard a sound approaching. Groups had to decide what action to take. Several groups decided to throw caution to the wind and fire at the approaching sound. These groups were horrified to learn that they had killed a cow being walked by a farmer. They are slowly learning that they must have patience during this game. What will tomorrow bring?
